Minor Adjustments

My sophomore year, it seemed like I was stuck at the fourth guard position for the longest. Finally, toward the middle of the season, I pulled Coach to the side after practice. I asked him straight up: “What do I have to do to play more? How can I improve my game? What are my weaknesses? What do you see as my strengths?” His answers were simple and to the point. He told me I needed to work on my attitude in practice, man-to-man defense, and make better entry passes into the post. He said my strength was that I played smart basketball.

So I went out every day before, during, and after practice, and worked on defensive drills and proper spacing for post-entry passes. I also changed my attitude toward practicing. After about three weeks of this, I noticed that my game improved. Coach noticed as well, and I spent the rest of the year as the No. 2 guard. All I had to do was open my mouth, communicate, and make that slight attitude adjustment.
